The Art of the In-between: a review of fashion’s biggest night

As you might know, the fashion event of the year took place on may 1st at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; where supermodels, fashion insiders, singers, actresses, socialités, and anyone who is someone, attended the claimed event to celebrate Rei Kawakubo’s professional life and legacy to the fashion world. The theme for this year’s event was: The Art of the In-between, that according to the exhibition’s press release “”This in-between space is revealed in Kawakubo’s work as an aesthetic sensibility, establishing an unsettling zone of oscillating visual ambiguity that challenges conventional notions of beauty, good taste, and fashionability.”

This show features 150 pieces designed by Rei Kawakubo from the early 80’s to these days, and it will open it’s door on may 4th. The designer said “I have always pursued a new way of thinking about design by denying established values, conventions, and what is generally accepted as the norm”. The japanese designer studied fine arts and literature at Keio University, worked in the advertising department at a textile company and as a freelance stylist, and after few years she started designing her own clothes which brought her to create her brand Comme des Garçons. This Brand is distinguish for her “anti-fashion” esthetic and deconstructed garments. This is the second time that the exhibition will show the work of a living designer, the first time was in 1983 that showed a proyection of Yves Saint Laurent’s work.

For this event’s theme the attendees had the chance to wear magnificent, over-the- top and innovative creations and celebrities paired up with the most influential designers to create the biggest and more eye-catching looks to walk together on the red carpet, so while some managed to really get everyone’s attention, other just wore a simple cute dress that didn’t really go with the theme. Here are some of our favorite looks and some others that just went unnoticed.

This year we saw Bella walking with Alexander Wang wearing a sexy glittering cat-suit that showed off her perfect slim body. With heels that perfectly matched her outfit, and a short bob, making it one of the most talked about outfits on the red carpet. Kylie Jenner shared her second Met with Donatella Versace. She had all eyes on her wearing a naked color tight dress, the sparkling details and the cascade feeling gave her the recognition for one of the best looks.

Madonna walked the red carpet with none other than Jeremy Scott, the designer of Moschino, showing a military print dress, with black leather gloves and lots of chains on her neck, with an accesory on her hand that simulated a “fish net” that we quite didn’t understand, giving her a really tough and strong look. Some people said she was trying to do a “political statement” other joked about her being “ready for World War III”. One thing is for sure, Madonna creates her own rules at every red carpet, what can we say? She is Madonna!

Kendall’s dress (if you can call that a dress) didn’t let anything to the imagination, wearing a super see through black piece from La Perla Couture. The outfit that showed her arms, legs, chest and also butt and underwear, was paired up with matching heels, a simple hairstyle and red lips. A risky look that totally worked for the model.

The Met was also a place for love, our favorite couples walked the red carpet looking their best, even one couple made their red carpet debut that night. Gisselle Bundchen and Tom Brady, Selena Gomez and The Weekend, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, and our all time favorites Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, giving us a glimpse of power couple feeling. But the best dressed couple has got to be Crissy Teigen and John Legend wearing Marchesa. Not only they were incredibly stylish but also an astounding way to show the theme, making this one of the most over the top looks we have seen from Crissy.

Other looks that we couldn’t stop talking about were Cara Delevigne, Janelle Monae, Halle Berry and Zendaya who dazzled the crowd with magnificent and creative looks, making them look classy, avant-gard and theme apropiate. Good for you girls!

However, some celebs didn’t quite get to the point of amazed and chose to go with a simple look and totally out of theme. Taylor Hill, Karli Kloss, Kate Hudson and shockingly Kim Kardashian, opted for a lowkey look that, even pretty, is just not Met-spectacular.

And last, but obviosly not least, we have the total divas of this year’s red carpet, Rihanna wearing Comme des Garçons and Katy Perry in Maison Margiela. The singers understood very well the concept of the event wearing, not only memorable garments, but very avant-gard looks, looking like walking art.
