Few designers left the legacy that Gianni Versace left behind. The iconic designer made us look to the future with his creations, his perception of top models, and how he made fashion relevant to the media. After 20 years of his passing, the industry and new generations of top models still feel the echo of his name. Yesterday, we met Gianni again on the runway for the spring/summer collection that Donatella Versace presented on September 22 in Milano.

Editors, fashion journalists, models, stylists and people from all over the world came together to watch the Versace show, which takes place twice a year during Fashion Month. Little did we know that Donatella was preparing a very special throwback that would make us sigh, thrill, and dream of the amazing 90s. This time, for the spring/summer collection, the house’s artistic director decided to pay homage to her brother, Gianni, who passed away tragically in 1997.
The show started as a traditional Versace runway: with supermodels, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, and Kaia Gerber walking down. However, we couldn’t help but think: “I’m feeling a special déjà-vu”. Models wore Gianni’s most iconic designs as a clin d’oeil to his talent and legacy. In the end, the supermodels of the 90s, Carla Bruni, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen, and Naomi Campbell met once again to remember the man, the legend. With their golden dresses, they made us remember why they are the original super!

Versace was one of the first designers to use celebrities and media as publicity, and supermodels as allies for its brand. He knew how important it was to be in front of the cameras, and he recognize the power of celebrities endorsement deals fo the fashion industry. Anna Wintour said once “He was the first to realize the value of the celebrity in the front row, and the value of the supermodel, and put fashion on an international media platform”.
Wild prints, bright colors, square-shouldered jackets, leggings, catsuits, corsets, trenches, maxi skirts, high-waisted jeans, logo tees, fanny packs, and jeweled stiletto boots, this collection shows the styles that made Gianni one of the most renowned and influential designers in the world but also relieves the characteristic style of the ’90s, the glamour and eccentric style that represents this decade and the house.
